A LUXURY VACATION TO QUITO & THE HIGHLANDS

Surrounded by snowcapped Andean peaks, sitting at 2,850 metres, the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, clings to a narrow valley at the foot of Pichincha Volcano. The nearby highlands are teeming with cultural and natural wonders to explore.

Quito’s historic centre is amongst the largest and best preserved in South America, studded with colonial churches and chapels, convents, monasteries and bustling markets. A string of volcanoes (Otavalo, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo are the big ones!) runs through the centre of the country. Either side of the impressive peaks the land gives way to rich pasture populated by herds of horses and cattle. Peppered throughout this landscape are rivers, lakes and colonial towns such as Cuenca, the cultural capital of Ecuador and home of the ‘Panama hat’. These Sierra highlands are heaven for walking, riding and cycling, staying at traditional haciendas and visiting Indigenous craft markets.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN QUITO AND THE HIGHLANDS

Adjust to the altitude and immerse yourself in the well-preserved colonial city before heading off to explore the highlands.

Constructed on the foundations of an ancient Incan city, Quito is abundant in 16th and 17th century churches and buildings that showcase European, Moorish and indigenous influences.

Board the Tren Crucero for a magnificent tour of Ecuador’s history and culture. Winding its way from Quito through the Highlands to the coastal city Guayaquil this three-night train ride is one of the best ways to experience Ecuador.

Two nights at Quito’s fabulous Casa Gangotena is the perfect prelude to the surrounding highlands or onward adventures into the Amazon or to the Galapagos Islands.
