The area surrounding the capital city of San Jose features coffee plantations, mountains and smouldering volcanoes. This fertile region, known as the central highlands, is home to almost three quarters of the population.
To the west is Monteverde, famous for its immense biodiversity and cloud forests. Favoured by naturalists, its abundant flora includes 2,500 species of plant, and a huge variety of orchids. These pristine habitats are populated by ocelots, margays, tapirs, monkeys, keel-billed toucan, umbrella birds, the endangered quetzal, and some 30 species of hummingbird.
To the north, the mighty Arenal Volcano rises out of thick forest. The Arenal National Park is known to contain half the known species of birds, mammals and reptiles.
